Yet again the gender gap rears its ugly face. This time it’s the Feds weighing in via the Government Accountability Office.
The GAO, in Congressional testimony, reported that women make up just 40 percent of this country’s managerial ranks (in 10 years, since 2000, that number has risen by 1 … yes, 1 !!! percent). And if you’re a working mother, Forget It! Mothers with children under the age of 18 account for an astonishingly low 14 percent of all managers, a number that hasn’t changed since 2000.
Think the ‘good ole’ boys’ are looking out for your interest? Think again!
The Mommy Factor is a huge hurdle to cross over. Of late, young, single, childless women are actually OUTEARNING their male counterparts, by a median 8%. But once there are children involved, even ‘fast track’ upward women tend to scale back their hours to better parent.
Working Mothers, you more than nearly any other women most need to protect yourself by negotiating. Know what you want and ask for it. And know what you won’t abide and make sure it isn’t visited upon you by the ‘invisible hand’ of the market!
